Canvas or cassette tape holder?

Thomas Kinkade, El Capitan, oil on cassette tape cover, 6 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. ©️Nanette Kinkade Family Trust.

When Thomas Kinkade felt inspired to capture something in his surroundings, he didn’t let any obstacles get in his way. For example, if he had already painted on all of the canvases and boards he had brought with him, he resourcefully used whatever was on hand as a painting surface. In this case, he painted on the cover of a cassette tape holder! We especially love how the plastic cover adds to the materiality of this painting.

Verso: Turning the painting over reveals the origins of the painting's surface - a cassette tape holder!
